Ko Wai Mātou | About us

Kahurangi Studios is a cross-disciplinary studio exploring the intersection of arts and engineering, humanities and science. We celebrate stories of material and craft, uncovering potential in salvaged and sustainably sourced materials to create treasures imbued with stories of their own.

Founded by Hamish Campbell (Ngāti Raukawa Te Au ki te Tonga), a mechanical engineer with creative flair and a keen eye for design, Kahurangi Studios reflects a commitment to merging innovation with tradition. Hamish brings experience in product development across industries such as medical devices, consumer electronics, and tapware. He weaves his strong Māori identity with his technical expertise to navigate the waka of Kahurangi.

Every handcrafted piece is one of a kind, telling its own story—a story of transformation, care, and respect for the materials we work with. From sourcing to design, prototyping to the final build, our process is deeply rooted in craftsmanship and a connection to whakapapa (genealogy).

We view our products as the offspring of the materials we work with, each carrying its own whakapapa. By honouring the origins and histories of these materials, we elevate their mana and breathe new life into them.

We manaaki our product and materials at each production step, resulting in pieces that embody sustainability, artistry, and a deep respect for both the past and the future.
